I haven't updated this in a while so here comes a post about what I'm getting up to at the end of term. Our last design assignment was to make a multiplayer deathmatch map in UDK for Unreal Tournament. It is due in tomorrow and we're going to spend the lesson playing everyone's levels. It's gonna be pretty sweet. However, I have to get my level finished to a certain standard. I started thinking about possible settings and liked the idea of using an Amphitheater as inspiration. So first of all I did some research into the architecture and layout of amphitheaters and in particular the Colosseum of Rome. However, the pictures I collected for research won't upload here for some reason so here is just one of the pictures I was looking at.
Of course, the design is complex and on a really large scale. My first challenge was to try and figure out where opportunities for gameplay lie and whether or not it would actually be fun. I also had to make sure the scale was right. There are around 12 people in the class so luckily I could make the map fairly large without making it too big. After drawing up rough 2D sketches, I started to block out my map in UDK. Here is a screen shot I captured after working on it last week.
Here I have the basic layout down and I just need to add some details etc. Stay tuned for update 2!
